Thompson’s Masterclass Propels Derby to First…

Liam Thompson Shines as Derby Secure First Away Win of the Season.

Derby County’s 2-1 victory at Coventry on Tuesday night marked a significant milestone for the

Rams, securing their first away win of the season in the Championship. The triumph also ended a

frustrating four-match winless run and brought a much-needed boost to Paul Warne’s side.

A key highlight of the performance was the inclusion of Liam Thompson, who was handed his first

Championship start of the season. Former Derby goalkeeper Eric Steele, speaking on BBC Radio

Derby’s *Rams Daily* podcast, was quick to praise the 21-year-old midfielder’s impact on the game.

Steele highlighted Thompson’s energy, technical ability, and composure in possession, which played

a crucial role in the Rams controlling the match and keeping Coventry at bay.

“Liam Thompson did exactly what was needed. He got around people, retained possession, and

showed excellent decision-making in key moments,” Steele said. “Alongside Kenzo Goudmijn, they

controlled the tempo for a crucial 20-minute period that really swung the match in Derby’s favour.”

The victory was also a testament to manager Paul Warne’s tactical changes, with the Rams making

five changes to the starting line-up following their disappointing 1-0 defeat to Stoke on Saturday.

The reshaped team delivered a much-improved performance, with Derby dominating possession

and managing to hold onto their lead despite late pressure from Coventry.

“This was a massive performance,” Steele added. “After the disappointment on Saturday, it was

essential to get back on track. The shape and balance worked well, and the players really stepped up.

I’m so pleased for Thompson, who has been a shining light in this performance.”

With the win giving Derby a much-needed confidence boost, attention now turns to their upcoming

home match, where they will look to build on their success and climb further up the Championship

table.
