Since the Lions acquired the seasoned running back from Chicago as a free agent in 2023, David Montgomery has fulfilled all of their expectations. The explosiveness and speed of Jahmyr Gibbs are perfectly complemented by his hard running style and short-area quickness. The NFL’s top running back tandem consists of the two. Montgomery establishes the offensive philosophy of the Lions. For his efforts during and around Seattle’s defence in Week 4, he has already received the Angry Runs sceptre from Good Morning Football. He is among the top 10 running backs in the league with 15 broken tackles this season.
“They run the ball hard and it’s no fun to tackle them” is one of the finest things someone can say about a running back. Montgomery is that. His sprinting style instantly reminds Lions head coach Dan Campbell of football in the past. “He’s a throwback to me,” Campbell remarked. With all due respect, I mean to say that he has some retro values. He has a unique running style. “Look, we watched some clips this morning, and I believe that (Texans RB Joe) Mixon at Houston runs really hard and has an aggressive style in today’s football as well, but I believe David is just different and he’s downhill, doesn’t give up, and first guy, he won’t let him tackle him, keeps churning.”
