Although they were defeated, there are several positives to build on, but Derby will need to turn these strong performances into results if they hope to climb the Championship standings.
In what was a thrilling encounter at Elland Road, Derby County’s hopes o
securing a vital three points were dashed as they fell 2-1 to Leeds United.
Despite a spirited performance, the Rams were unable to overcome a Leeds
side that was determined to keep pace with the Championship’s top teams.
However, there were standout performances from a couple of Derby players
who earned praise for their efforts.
Here’s a detailed look at the Derby County player ratings following their
narrow defeat to Leeds United:
Joe Wildsmith – 6/10.
The Derby County goalkeeper had an up-and-down game, with some solid
moments mixed with occasional uncertainty. He was unable to do much about
either of Leeds’ goals, which came from well-placed efforts. However,
Wildsmith made a couple of good saves to keep his team in the game,
particularly in the second half, where his reflexes were tested more than once.
Teden Mengi – 7/10.
A strong performance from the young centre-back, Mengi was composed
under pressure and handled Leeds’ attacking threats well for the majority of
the match. He showed excellent positioning and was a constant presence in
aerial duels. His ability to read the game allowed Derby to break up several
attacks, but he did miss a crucial clearance which led to Leeds’ second goal.
Despite that, Mengi’s overall display was solid.
Craig Forsyth – 7/10.
Forsyth, playing at left centre-back, was another solid performer for the Rams.
His experience and leadership were clear, as he marshaled his defense through
a particularly difficult first half. He made key clearances and blocks and was
generally reliable in stopping Leeds’ attacks. While he was caught out of
position at times, Forsyth’s resilience was one of the few positives for Derby on
the night.
Curtis Davies – 6/10.
Davies had a mixed game, showing glimpses of his usual commanding self but
struggling at times to keep up with Leeds’ dynamic attacking players. He was
particularly vulnerable to the pace and movement of the Leeds front line, and
although he made some important clearances, he was involved in some of the
defensive frailties that led to Derby conceding.
Nathaniel Mendez-Laing – 7/10.
The winger continued to provide Derby with some much-needed width and
attacking flair. Mendez-Laing had a decent game, using his pace and skill to
get down the wing and create opportunities for his teammates. His delivery
into the box was often dangerous, and although he didn’t register an assist, his
involvement in build-up play kept Leeds’ defense on edge.
Max Bird – 7/10.
Max Bird was one of Derby’s better performers in the midfield battle. The
midfielder showed great energy and determination, constantly breaking up
Leeds’ attacks and distributing the ball with precision. His passing range was
evident, and he was able to dictate large portions of the game from the middle
of the park. However, he couldn’t prevent the eventual defeat and struggled to
influence the game as Leeds started to dominate in the final stages.
Jason Knight – 8/10.
Knight was one of Derby’s standout performers, earning a deserved 8/10 for
his tireless work rate and commitment. He was a constant driving force in the
middle of the park, winning tackles, intercepting passes, and creating a
number of dangerous situations. Knight’s energy and tenacity were a highlight,
and he was one of the few players who kept pushing until the final whistle,
always looking to make things happen for Derby.
Kamil Jozwiak – 6/10.
The Polish winger had a quiet game and failed to make a significant impact on
proceedings. Jozwiak was often crowded out by the Leeds defense, and
although he had some good moments, his final product was lacking. A bit
more creativity and better decision-making in the final third could have made
a difference in Derby’s chances.
David McGoldrick – 7/10.
McGoldrick, playing as the main striker, worked hard throughout the match
and was often a focal point in Derby’s attacking play. Although he didn’t
manage to score, McGoldrick played an important role in linking up play and
getting others involved. His movement in and around the box kept Leeds’
defenders occupied, and he looked dangerous with his quick feet and
awareness.
Conor Hourihane – 6/10.
Hourihane’s influence on the game was muted, as he struggled to make the
impact Derby needed from midfield. While his passing was solid at times, he
didn’t create enough clear-cut chances and was often bypassed as Leeds
pressed forward. Hourihane couldn’t control the tempo of the game as he
would have liked, and Derby missed his creativity during crucial moments.
James Collins – 5/10.
Collins had a difficult game up front, as Derby struggled to get the ball to him
in dangerous areas. The striker was isolated for long stretches, and when he
did have opportunities, his finishing was not up to par. He wasn’t able to make
any major contribution in terms of goals or assists, and his overall
performance was disappointing given Derby’s need for a clinical finish.
Conclusion.
While the Rams gave a good account of themselves, ultimately, Leeds United’s
sharper attack and defensive resilience proved the difference. Jason Knight’s
energetic display and Max Bird’s calm presence in midfield were the bright
spots in an otherwise challenging night for Derby County. Despite the loss,
there are plenty of positives to take forward, but they will need to convert
these performances into points if they are to push up the Championship table.
