athlete in Virginia Tech history to have her jersey honored in this way, further

cementing her legacy as one of the greatest players to ever wear the maroon

and orange.

    A Legacy of Excellence.

Elizabeth Kitley’s impact on Virginia Tech and women’s basketball cannot be

overstated. Over the course of five seasons, Kitley redefined the program and

established herself as one of the most dominant forces in college basketball. As

Virginia Tech’s all-time leader in games started, minutes played, points scored,

scoring average, double-figure scoring games, field goals made, and blocks,

she set a benchmark that future Hokies will strive to reach.

Her extraordinary accomplishments also include holding the ACC records for

rebounds (1,506) and double-doubles (76). Kitley was the driving force behind

the Hokies’ first-ever ACC regular-season title in the 2023-24 season, where

she led the league in both scoring and rebounding. Her exceptional

performance earned her the ACC Player of the Year award for a remarkable

third consecutive year. She also garnered numerous accolades, including first-

team All-ACC honors, All-Defensive Team recognition, and was named the

Kay Yow Scholar Athlete of the Year for the third time.

Throughout her time at Virginia Tech, Kitley led the Hokies to 115 victories,

including an impressive 66-11 record at home in Cassell Coliseum. Known for

her work ethic and leadership, she played a pivotal role in transforming the

Hokies into one of the premier programs in women’s college basketball.

Off the court, Kitley’s character and commitment to the values of Virginia Tech

have made her a beloved figure, embodying the spirit of Ut Prosim, “That I

May Serve.” Her tireless work ethic, dedication, and passion for the game will

leave a lasting impact on future generations of Hokie athletes.

On Sunday, fans will gather to celebrate Kitley’s remarkable career during a

number 33 jersey will be unveiled and officially retired in front of the Hokies

faithful, making this event an unforgettable milestone for both Kitley and the

program. The ceremony will take place during the game against Louisville,

which has been dubbed “Liz Kitley Night” in her honor.

Virginia Tech Director of Athletics, Whit Babcock, expressed the significance

of this moment, stating, “Elizabeth’s impact on Virginia Tech and women’s

basketball transcends statistics. Her passion, work ethic, and character have

left an enduring legacy that is inspiring the next generation. Retiring her jersey
