Nine Parrish Middle School students were safely evacuated from a school bus that caught fire in the Highland area Tuesday afternoon.
Firefighters responded to the 2200 block of Northeast Front Street just before 5 p.m. and found smoke coming from the engine compartment at the back of the bus, said Brian Carrara, Salem Fire Department deputy chief of administrative services
All students riding the bus had been evacuated when firefighters arrived, Carrara said. Flames only began coming out of the bus after all students were off.
Firefighters had the fire under control in four minutes, he said. The cause was undetermined.
No students were injured and all were transported safely home by family members, said Aaron Harada, Salem-Keizer School District spokesman.
