Not Sha’Carri Richardson, but Jamaican Rival Shericka Jackson Backed by Gabby Thomas to Break Flo-Jo’s Record
For the past 36 years, competitors have echoed the sentiment of coming close but falling short in their attempts to break Florence Griffith-Joyner’s 200-meter world record of 21.34 seconds. This record remains unmatched, even in times when tracks were challenging and footwear less advanced.
Despite advancements in spikes and track technology, only a handful of female athletes have approached Florence Griffith-Joyner’s remarkable achievement since then. According to Gabby Thomas, Shericka Jackson is seen as capable of surpassing this milestone, unlike the fiery competitor Sha’Carri Richardson.
Currently in London for the Diamond League, the Olympic medalist in the 200m event, along with Brittany Brown and McKenzie Long, secured their spots for the Paris Olympics after Sha’Carri Richardson missed out in the trials. In a discussion with Sean Ingle from The Guardian, the focus shifted to Griffith-Joyner’s 200m record set at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.
Gabby noted, “I believe Shericka can achieve it.” It’s noteworthy that Shericka Jackson recorded 21.41 seconds last year, securing the second-best time in the all-time 200m rankings and claiming the world’s top title in Budapest. According to Gabby, Shericka Jackson might have another opportunity to break the record. In the same conversation, Gabby also expressed confidence in her own abilities.
