LeBron James expressed confidence that the Lakers can definitely win another NBA championship before he finishes his career.
LeBron James is optimistic about securing another championship with the Los Angeles Lakers before he retires from the NBA.
“Absolutely,” James assured ESPN’s Dave McMenamin in response to whether he thinks another title is possible with the Lakers.
When asked about the basis for his confidence, James explained, “Because we’ve already achieved it.”
In 2020, LeBron James and Anthony Davis guided the Lakers to their first NBA championship in ten years inside the NBA bubble.
However, the Lakers have struggled to replicate that success. They advanced to the Western Conference Finals in 2023 but were swept by the eventual champion Denver Nuggets. Last postseason, they were defeated by the Nuggets in five games during the first round.
James is confident that he and Anthony Davis elevate the Lakers’ status as contenders.
“We have two guys who dedicate themselves every day, myself and AD. We’re committed to achieving greatness,” James remarked.
He added, “We’re not far off. Just a year ago, we were in the Western Conference Finals. Last season didn’t go as planned, but we’re close. There are many strong teams across both conferences, but we don’t see ourselves as inferior to anyone.”
Earlier, it was reported by Dave McMenamin that James declined his $51.4 million player option for the 2024-25 season with the Lakers. His agent indicated James would consider a pay cut to enable the Lakers to utilize their full mid-level exception if they could add a significant player.
Candidates such as James Harden, Klay Thompson, or Jonas Valančiūnas were mentioned. However, with these players now on different teams, James opted instead for a two-year, $101.35 million contract with the Lakers. This amount, slightly below the maximum, prevents the Lakers from accessing the $12.8 million mid-level exception but keeps them below the second salary apron, easing free-agent and trade constraints (per ESPN’s Bobby Marks).
James may be hopeful this decision provides enough flexibility for Lakers GM Rob Pelinka to construct another championship-contending team as James enters his seventh season with the franchise.
