Men’s Water Polo Lose Two Close Games in First Action of the Weekend.
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (October 26, 2024) – Mount St. Mary’s men’s water polo faced tough competition in both of their MAWPC matches on Saturday, narrowly falling to Johns Hopkins 15-13 and losing in overtime to Navy 15-12.
In their first game in Baltimore, the Mountaineers struggled in the first half, trailing the Blue Jays 7-4. However, they fought back with a strong five-goal third quarter, reducing Johns Hopkins’ lead to three goals. Despite their efforts, early goals from the Blue Jays ultimately sealed the Mount’s fate, resulting in a two-goal loss.
Michael Lemishko marked a milestone in this match by scoring his 100th career goal for the program, contributing two goals against Johns Hopkins. Zach Fischer, Alexandros Bellesis, and Aaron Tarr each scored hat tricks, while Sherif Hosni made an impressive 10 saves in goal.
In the second match against Navy, the Mountaineers were down 8-5 at halftime. A strong second half, highlighted by a goal from Chrysostomos Valavanis with less than two minutes left, allowed the Mount to equalize and push the game into overtime. However, Navy regained their momentum, scoring three goals in overtime to secure the win.
Vasilije Marinkovic made 14 saves in goal during his first game of the weekend. Bellesis added four more goals to his weekend total, while Valavanis and Nicholas Wallace-Whitfield also contributed hat tricks to the team’s score.
