Wigan Warriors’ Liam Farrell says Super League champions can’t be…

Wigan fans have every reason to be thrilled for the new season, knowing their team is led by a captain who is determined to keep pushing forward and never settle for past achievements.

Wigan Warriors captain Liam Farrell has been candid about the challenges of

defending his team’s historic quadruple achievement in 2025. The 34-year-old

second-row, who led the club to a remarkable season that saw them lift the

Super League title, World Club Challenge, Challenge Cup, and League Leaders’

Shield, understands that repeating such success will be no easy feat. However,

despite the heavy expectations, he insists the Warriors won’t take anything for

granted, knowing the competition will be fierce.

Wigan’s 2024 triumph was nothing short of legendary, with the club achieving

its first-ever quadruple. The Warriors captured the hearts of fans and made a

mark in rugby league history. For Farrell, it’s an achievement that is still very

much celebrated, but he’s quick to acknowledge that moving into 2025 will

require fresh focus, effort, and humility.

“It’s a good question,” Farrell said when asked about the challenge of following

up on their extraordinary season. “Winning all four titles, I don’t think you can

just forget about it and assume we can do the same again. We need to embrace

what we achieved last year, but we won’t be going into this season thinking we

can just repeat it. That would be disrespectful, to think we could just do it all

over again. It would be naive to assume that.”

Farrell’s mindset underscores a key element in his leadership style: a

grounded and respectful approach to the game. While his team was

undoubtedly the strongest in Super League last year, Farrell knows that

maintaining such dominance is an ongoing challenge. The success of 2024 is

still fresh, and rivals are now more determined than ever to knock Wigan off

their perch.

The Warriors captain emphasizes that the road to another successful season

will be defined by constant learning and adaptation. “We won’t be complacent.

Other teams are going to be chasing us down. That’s how this sport works. As

much as we’ve had a great year, we need to ensure we improve as a team, even

when we’re winning,” Farrell explained. “Last year, we didn’t always play

perfectly, but we found ways to win when things weren’t going our way, which

is a sign of a great team.”

As Wigan Warriors open their 2025 campaign against local rivals Leigh on

February 13, Farrell’s focus is not on replicating past success but on ensuring

the team’s continued development. “We are taking it one game at a time,”

Farrell said. “It’s about looking at round one, assessing where we are as a

team, and taking it from there. If we can improve as the season progresses,

we’ll give ourselves the best chance.”

Looking ahead, Farrell is also contemplating his future beyond 2025. With his

contract set to expire at the end of the 2025 season, the seasoned forward is

determined to prove that he can keep playing at the highest level. Despite

being 34, Farrell feels as fit and healthy as ever, and he is aiming to extend his

career into 2026.

“I’m enjoying what I’m doing,” Farrell said. “I feel pretty healthy and I’d like to

think I could still be around for a few more years. It’s all about maintaining my

fitness and keeping my body in shape.” With a degree and a master’s in sports

science under his belt, Farrell is also considering his future in a different

capacity once his playing days are over. “I’ve done my qualifications, but I

don’t really see myself coaching. I enjoy watching the game and want to keep

that enjoyment. I might look to get involved in the performance side of things

down the line.”

Farrell’s leadership and commitment to Wigan Warriors have been key to the

club’s success, and his ambition to keep improving and contributing to the

team is evident. As the 2025 season unfolds, Farrell’s mindset will be crucial in

guiding his team through the challenges ahead. For Wigan Warriors, the

pressure of being the reigning champions is real, but under Farrell’s

leadership, they are poised to continue striving for greatness, no matter how

tough the journey may be.

Wigan’s fans are rightfully excited to see their team back in action, knowing

they are in the hands of a captain who refuses to rest on his laurels.
