Closing a Chapter: Johnson Announces Retirement
Shaun Johnson, the halfback for the One New Zealand Warriors, has announced his retirement from his 14-season NRL career, with plans to step away from the game at the end of the current season.
Turning 34 next month, Johnson shared his decision with his teammates earlier today before making a public announcement later this evening.
“This is a choice I’ve been contemplating for a while and am still coming to terms with,” Johnson told his teammates.
“It’s still very emotional, but I’m incredibly thankful to the club and to all of you for the daily support and camaraderie. I’ve never taken any of it for granted.
“There’s still work to be done this season, so let’s focus on our goals. I wanted to let you all know first that I’ll be retiring at the end of the season.”
Johnson, who has struggled with a chronic Achilles injury this season, returned after a six-week absence to make his 265th career appearance—his 221st for the Warriors—in Friday night’s 20-30 loss to the Eels.
“One entire generation of kids in New Zealand started playing rugby league because of Shaun Johnson,” said Cameron George, CEO of One New Zealand Warriors.
“His influence on both the club and rugby league in New Zealand will be remembered for a long time.
“Shaun has been an exceptional player, and his impact as a person at the Warriors has been equally significant over the years.”
“I understand that Shaun’s decision was not made lightly, and he will leave with the complete backing of the club and his teammates.
“Our final home game of the season against the Bulldogs, which will also be a sell-out, will serve as a fitting send-off for him at Go Media Stadium.
“We are grateful for everything Shaun has contributed to the club and extend our best wishes to him and his family for the future.”
