Iron Maiden Legend, Clive Burr, Passes Away at 63 Leaving Fans and Bandmates Devastated
March 12, 2013 – The metal world mourns the loss of Clive Burr, Iron Maiden’s original drummer and pivotal figure in shaping the band’s iconic sound. Burr passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 63, surrounded by his family.
Burr’s struggles with multiple sclerosis had been well-documented, and despite his resilience, the disease ultimately took its toll. His passing has sent shockwaves through the metal community, with fans, colleagues, and former bandmates paying tribute to his legacy.
“Clive was a wonderful person and an incredible musician,” said Iron Maiden founder and bassist Steve Harris. “He was a key part of Maiden’s early success and a great friend. We’ll miss him dearly.”
Born on March 8, 1957, in London, England, Burr joined Iron Maiden in 1975, replacing the band’s original drummer, Doug Sampson. His dynamic stage presence and distinctive drumming style helped define Maiden’s signature sound.
Burr played on Iron Maiden’s first three albums: “Iron Maiden” (1980), “Killers” (1981), and “The Number of the Beast” (1982). His contributions to these albums cemented Maiden’s status as pioneers of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal.
“Clive was the heartbeat of Iron Maiden during our formative years,” said Iron Maiden vocalist Paul Di’Anno. “His drumming was the backbone of our sound, and his enthusiasm was infectious.”
After leaving Iron Maiden in 1982, Burr went on to play with various bands, including Trust, Alcatrazz, and Clive Burr’s Escape. Despite health issues, he continued to perform and record music until his passing.
